What is a Colorectal Surgeon?

Experts in both surgical and non-surgical treatment of problems associated with the colon, rectum and anus, colorectal surgeons provide the most comprehensive care, including diagnosis and treatment of all colon and rectal issues. Colorectal surgeons have completed training in General Surgery and have advanced, specialized training in diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. CRSA physicians are certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Colorectal surgeons share many similarities with proctologists, but there are important differences. Colorectal surgeons are MDs with a full four-year medical degree. Colorectal surgeons are then trained in all aspects of surgery, completing a five-year residency program in General Surgery. Colorectal surgeons then receive additional specialty training in Colorectal Surgery.

While providing some similar aspects of patient care, gastroenterologists are medical physicians who complete training in Internal Medicine prior to specializing in gastroenterology. Gastroenterologists treat other organs (e.g., liver, stomach, pancreas and esophagus) in addition to the colon, rectum and anus. While both gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons prescribe medical, non-invasive treatment, only colorectal surgeons perform surgery when necessary.
